Must Haves for Moms with Infants- A Blog

If you are pregnant with your first child, other than the absolute basics (diapers, wipes, car seat, clothes, something to lay them in when they’re not attached to you , which is like 20 mins out of the day), figuring out what else you need for baby can be really really overwhelming. There are thousands items you could make a strong case for buying, and thousands more versions of that one item to pick from.

If you’re about to have your second, third, fourth....(I’ll just stop there), there’s always some new or cool “necessity” that didn’t exist before this time around. Or, in my case, there’s an old favorite that got recalled so you need to find a replacement favorite.

With everything that’s available, it’s hard to know what is a “must haves”.

I can’t assume to know what your favorites are or will be, but I can tell you what I found to be mine. And just know, I only had two of the products I’m going to tell you about before having my daughter, but the rest were lifesavers once I found out they existed and how useful they were. I hope they can be useful to you too. I hope you find these suggestions helpful, affordable, and wide-ranging. Enjoy and happy shopping for your new little one.

Originally on my list was the Fisher Price Rock n Play. It was the perfect bassinet type rocker for infants not quite ready for the crib yet and it was easily portable. Unfortunately, it has been recently put on the recall list. The rocker laid on in incline, which I originally loved since my daughter had reflux issues. However too many infants were dying because they would turn over in the rocker and not be able to turn back. So my mission was to find an alternative that was safer, easily portable, nice looking and inexpensive.

That’s when I stumbled upon the MiClassic Bassinet. It is all of the characteristics I described. Plus, it can stand stand stationary or it can rock. I have no personal experience with this product but it is an Amazon best seller with over 400 customer reviews. I’m looking forward to trying it with #2 in a few months.

I had many many struggles breastfeeding my daughter. And although I had received 3 Boppy pillows and was really excited to use them, I soon found that, for me, it wasn’t giving enough support in holding up the baby as I tried the nurse her.
Then my lactation consultant told me about My Brest Friend and it was a great help. The pillow itself was firmer and flatter than the Boppy, which helped me keep the baby in position. And the “wrap around” design helps me have good posture as I was nursing. As my daughter and I had an easier time breastfeeding I didn’t need to use it as much but it was definitely necessary in the beginning and I’m excited that I get to start out with it when number #2 comes.

In the first months of breastfeeding, there are two things that happen. Your nipples HURT. You don’t want any material touching them AT ALL. And, if you go long enough without feeding your baby or pumping, they leak. Introducing Breast Shells! These are plastic cups that fit over your nipple comfortably so you can wear bras and shirts without the nipple rubbing on the material.

Sleep ‘N Play Zip Up Sleeper So the cute little 2 and 3 piece infant outfits are....well...cute. But when you’re changing 10-12 diapers a day, you will love having something quick and easy to slip baby in and out of. Stock up on these gems because baby will go through them quickly with spit ups or diaper blow outs. You can never have too many sleepers. This link takes you to the Gerber brand which gives you more for your money but Carters has a line called Simple Joys which are decently priced too. Baby is going to grow out of these quickly so you don’t want to spend to much on them but, again, you want to have a decent amount on hand as well.

I wish I had discovered baby wearing when my daughter was younger. She was a few months old when I was first put on to baby wearing and it changed my daily life. After practicing the wrap a few times, it became the easiest way to carrier her around with me and still move around the house hands free. What freedom! The Boba is lighter and feels more secure, to me, especially for young infants, than carriers like the Ergo. (The Ergo does sell an infant insert to make it more secure for young infants which is helpful if dad prefers the Ergo to the wrap). It’s also less bulky and warm so I could wear my baby and put an opened jacket on and go for a walk quickly. They come in tons of colors and designs which is also fun.

This is one of the products I swore I would never use. “I’m not sucking snot out of my kids nose.” Just as what often happens, we say all the things we’re never going to do as parents, then end up doing them. The first time my daughter was really congested and I tried to use that aspirator thing, it did nothing. Nothing came out. And she was so miserable, I bit the bullet, got on Amazon and ordered the Frida to arrive the next day. I was so nervous using it for the first time. Honestly all that was stopping the snot from getting into your mouth is a little blue filter. But let me tell you: IT WORKS. It is so satisfying seeing all the snot you just sucked out of your kid’s nose, knowing how much relief it’s going to bring them. And in all the hundreds of times I used it, the filter has never failed. This is a definite MUST HAVE!

My daughter loved this teether. She loved the texture on the “bristles” on her gums and being able to easily hold it. I loved that it gave her practice “brushing her teeth” and it was way cheaper than that giraffe teether everyone loves.

This was another random toy we received from a friend that my daughter absolutely loved. She loved holding it, chewing on it, shaking it, and eventually throwing it. Since I didn’t buy it I had absolutely no idea what it was called. I still don’t fully get the name but I know that it has been a favorite for my daughter, I’m sure it will be a favorite of #2 and I hope it’s a favorite for your baby.
